Meet the cast

The usual suspects

Six Top End troublemakers. Flip a mugshot for the rap sheet: what it’s known for, the signs to look for, and our move.

  1. Nº 01 · Termite

    The giant northern termite

aka Mastotermes darwiniensis, the Top End’s heavyweight

    Rap sheet · Nº 01

    Known for
Eating timber from the inside out: stumps, frames, fences, even living trees.
    Signs
Mud tubes on stumps and piers, hollow-sounding timber, blistered paint, mud packed into cracks.
    Our move
Inspection first. Don’t spray or break open the workings; it only sends them somewhere else in the house.
  2. Nº 02 · Cockroach

    The German cockroach

aka the one behind your fridge

    Rap sheet · Nº 02

    Known for
Breeding fast in warm, damp kitchens and hitching rides in boxes and appliances.
    Signs
Pepper-like droppings, a musty smell, egg cases tucked behind fridges and under sinks.
    Our move
Targeted gel baits where they hide, not a cloud of spray, plus a follow-up.
  3. Nº 03 · Huntsman

    The huntsman

    aka the dashboard surprise

    Rap sheet · Nº 03

    Known for
Being large, fast and flat enough to live behind picture frames and sun visors.
    Signs
You, screaming. They’re shy hunters that eat other insects and rarely bother people.
    Our move
Relocate outside where we can; treat eaves and frames if there are lots.
  4. Nº 04 · Redback

    The redback

aka the one in the letterbox

    Rap sheet · Nº 04

    Known for
Messy, tangled webs in dry, sheltered spots: under outdoor chairs, in sheds and letterboxes.
    Signs
Untidy webs low to the ground with small round egg sacs. The bite is venomous: get medical advice promptly.
    Our move
Treat hiding spots around the house; gloves on for yard work.
  5. Nº 05 · Roof rat

    The roof rat

    aka the 2am ceiling tap-dancer

    Rap sheet · Nº 05

    Known for
Climbing palms and power lines into roof voids, then chewing whatever is up there.
    Signs
Scratching at night, droppings in the roof, gnawed cables, greasy rub marks along beams.
    Our move
Find and seal the way in, then stations or traps over three visits.
  6. Nº 06 · Mosquito

    The mozzie

    aka the wet-season whine

    Rap sheet · Nº 06

    Known for
Breeding in any still water after rain, from pot-plant saucers to blocked gutters.
    Signs
Wrigglers in standing water; bites at dusk and dawn. Some mosquitoes carry disease, so cover up.
    Our move
Remove breeding sites first, then a barrier treatment on shady foliage.

General information only — for bites, stings or health worries, talk to a doctor or pharmacist.

The Top End survival guide

Eight things you can do this week so the critters have less to come for.

  1. 1Starve them of water

Fix dripping taps and air-con drains. Cockroaches can go longer without food than without water.

  2. 2Don’t feed the monsters

Seal food, wipe benches at night, and take the bin out before it gets lively.

  3. 3Mind the gap

Keep mulch, soil and timber off the slab and clear of weep holes, so termite activity stays visible.

  4. 4Tip it out

In the Wet, empty pot-plant saucers, buckets and tarps weekly. Wrigglers need only a splash.

  5. 5Look up

Scratching in the ceiling at night? Trim palms and branches back from the roofline.

  6. 6Gloves in the shed

Redbacks love dry, sheltered corners. Gloves for the shed, the letterbox and under outdoor chairs.

  7. 7Leave the workings alone

Found termites? Don’t spray or break open the mud. Call for an inspection and leave them be until then.

  8. 8Book the yearly check

In the Top End, most homes are worth a termite inspection at least once a year.

General information only. Every home is different; we’ll tell you what matters for yours.
