Epidermis
The surface you see and touch — on your face, about as thin as a sheet of paper. New cells form at the base and take around four weeks to rise, flatten and shed.
- 1Stratum corneum. Flattened, dead surface cells that form the barrier.
- 2Keratinocytes. The working cells of the epidermis, maturing as they move up.
- 3Melanocyte. Makes melanin, the pigment behind tanning and dark spots.
