Exam preparation

Andante, ben marcato

Graded practical and theory exams, from the first grade to diploma level — if and when a student wants them.

Exams are optional. Some students love a goal on the calendar; others never sit one and play beautifully anyway. When we do prepare, we cover every section and hold a mock exam in the studio a fortnight before.

Pieces
Choosing a balanced list the student enjoys, then shaping it bar by bar.
Technical work
Scales, arpeggios and studies — practised little and often, never in a panic.
Aural
Clapping, singing back and recognising intervals, done as games in every lesson.
Sight-reading
A new short piece each week, so the real thing feels familiar.
General knowledge
Composers, terms and what the music is doing — the fun part of theory.

General information only: exam requirements are set by each examining board, and entry fees are paid to the board separately. We'll tell you honestly when we think a student is ready.

Adult beginners

Adagio, con pazienza

You don't need to have learnt as a child. You need a piano, twenty minutes most days, and a little patience with your left hand.

No keyboard at home yet? Start on a weighted 88-key digital piano — we'll help you choose one, with no commissions involved. Here's how a first ten-week term usually goes, in four bars:

Weeks 1–2

Find middle C, read the treble clef, play with a steady pulse.

Weeks 3–5

Both hands, simple rhythms, your first chords.

Weeks 6–8

A piece you chose, learnt left hand first.

Weeks 9–10

Put it together slowly — then play it for someone.

Recitals

Grazioso

Two informal recitals a year, in June and December, in a community hall in Mosman.

Everyone may play one piece; nobody has to. Beginners go first so they can relax and enjoy the rest, and there's afternoon tea afterwards — bring a plate if you like.

Programme · Sun 6 Dec · 2pm

The December Recital

  1. Minuet in GPetzold
  2. The EntertainerJoplin
  3. Gymnopédie No. 1Satie
  4. Für EliseBeethoven
  5. Prelude in E minorChopin

A sample running order — played by students of all ages.
